Experimentation and sampling

These man hole covers are taking over my every thought. They are fascinating objects really. Probably need to get out more!! I have  gathered primary information on shape, pattern and design  relating to the manhole covers, through rubbings, drawings and photography.

I also mapped a specific area using the manhole points as references. I did this while walking and drawing as the artist David Lilburn does. A very worthtwhile experience as it made me more aware of the  information  I was gathering.

Next step was to translate this primary information into 3D studies using paper. I created  a few of these 3D pieces. These shapes  translated very nicely  into ceramics using a layering effect. I feel this process gave life to another piece of work.

Another part of the work that really excites me is the exploration and development of what it would be like to be a man hole COVER..... Imagine the view....What would you see?  This I have to explore more.....  so I choose a manhole cover on a busy path down the end of Clare Street. Over a couple of  days I observed the people that walked over it. Footpath traffic... Posing another question for me. What could I tell about a street using only the view of a manhole?

I have to stage the images and photograph them  because I cant physically  get down in the manhole.
(would if i could). Some of  the scenes are of
 DOG SNIFFING
CHEWING GUM STUCK TO SHOE
CIG BUTT
PERSON DRUNK FACE SQUASHED AGAINST MANHOLE
everyday traffic across the face of the manhole cover.

This part of the project will challenge me in a number of ways. My first step is to Cast these images. It will be a process of elimination finding out what works and what dosen't. One things for sure it will not be boring....................
